Willamette Valley and Gorge winters aren’t the harshest in the country, but they’re exactly the kind that wears on a rigid surface: freezing nights, wet days, and a lot of freeze-thaw cycling packed into a normal January. Water finds its way into a hairline crack, freezes, expands, and pries the crack open a little wider. Do that on repeat for a few months and a small crack turns into a real problem.
Asphalt has some give built into it. It flexes slightly as the ground underneath moves with temperature and moisture, instead of fighting that movement the way a rigid concrete slab does. That flexibility matters most on properties with heavy tree cover, uneven drainage, or a long driveway that holds standing water after a hard rain, which describes a lot of driveways out here. It’s also why staying on top of routine crack filling and repair is worth it: catching a hairline crack before a wet winter gets into it is a lot easier than dealing with the pothole it becomes.
Concrete can hold up fine in this climate too, plenty of Oregon driveways prove it. It’s just less forgiving when the base underneath isn’t perfect, and any crack that does form tends to stay visible longer.
Asphalt needs a plan, but it’s a simple one. Left alone indefinitely, any asphalt driveway will fade, oxidize, and start showing surface cracks. The fix is sealcoating every 3 to 5 years, which renews the surface, seals out water and UV damage, and brings the finish back to nearly the same jet-black look it had on day one. It’s a predictable rhythm: a few years of use, an afternoon of sealcoating, then a few more years of a driveway that still looks cared for.
Concrete doesn’t have a matching resurfacing cycle, which sounds like an advantage until you look at what fills the gap instead. Light-colored concrete shows oil stains, tire marks, and mildew more readily than dark asphalt does, so a lot of owners end up pressure washing or resealing it every few years just to keep that clean look. And when concrete does eventually crack, patching it invisibly is genuinely hard: the repair almost always reads as a different shade and texture than the surrounding slab, and it stays visible for good. Asphalt patches blend back into the surface far more easily.
